Shown is a satellite image of the visible cloud cover over the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world (20% of the fresh surface water) and a source of fresh water for many millions of people. They are large enough to affect the local weather and can be the source of moisture for large snowfalls in their vicinity. Lake Superior is in the upper left, Lake Michigan in the lower left, Lake Huron in the middle, Lake Erie below Huron, and Lake Ontario on the right. There are approximately 35,000 Great Lake islands! Thousands of ships have sunk in the Great Lakes. Keep the water on the outside of your boat!
